Smart Aging Starts Now

When people hear the phrase “aging well,” they often think about something far in the future. Something to worry about later. Something that begins when retirement arrives or health concerns start to creep in.

But aging doesn’t start at a certain birthday.

It’s something we’re all doing right now.

And the choices we make today can make a tremendous difference in how we live tomorrow. That’s the idea behind our new Smart Aging Series, which launches this spring.

Throughout the series, we’ll explore practical topics that help people stay independent, informed, and prepared as they move through different stages of life. Because aging well isn’t about avoiding change. It’s about making thoughtful decisions that protect your health, finances, independence, and peace of mind.

Planning Today Protects Tomorrow

Many of the challenges people face later in life aren’t caused by a lack of options. They’re caused by a lack of information (and maybe some serious procrastination).

Families often find themselves scrambling to understand legal paperwork, benefits, insurance, or caregiving responsibilities during stressful moments. The Smart Aging Series is designed to help people get ahead of those challenges by learning about resources and planning before a crisis happens.

Whether you’re planning for yourself, helping a parent, navigating services for an adult with a disability, or supporting a spouse, having the right information makes a difference.

Conversations That Matter

This year’s Smart Aging Series will feature local experts sharing practical guidance on topics that affect many families.

We’ll begin on April 29 with a conversation about options for adults with disabilities and the families who support them. Navigating services, housing, and long-term support can be complicated, and this session will help families understand what options are available.

On May 13, Heidi Dodd, Attorney at Law with Dodd & Wambold, will join us for “Getting Your Affairs in Order.” This session will walk through the essential legal and planning documents every adult should understand, helping people protect their wishes and reduce stress for loved ones in the future.

Fraud and scams continue to target older adults across the country, which makes awareness more important than ever. On May 27, Missy Schmidtke from the Senior Medicare Patrol will share tips for protecting yourself and your loved ones from fraud, along with practical steps people can take to recognize and report scams.

Understanding health coverage is another topic many people find confusing. On June 10, Chris Fulton from the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) will break down the basics during Medicare 101, helping people understand their options and make informed decisions about their coverage.

Finally, on June 24, we’ll focus on benefits available to those who have served our country. The Madison County Veterans Assistance Commission will share information about veterans benefits that every veteran and spouse should know about, including programs many people don’t realize they qualify for. If you or your spouse served even a day, you should join us.

Knowledge Builds Independence

One of the most powerful tools we have as we age is knowledge. When people understand their options, they can make decisions that protect their independence, their finances, and their future.

The Smart Aging Series is designed to make those conversations easier and bring trusted information directly to our community.

Aging Is Something We All Share

Aging is a journey every one of us is on. By learning, planning, and supporting one another along the way, we can help ensure that people in our community continue to live with dignity, purpose, and connection.

Because smart aging doesn’t begin someday.

It starts now.

All sessions are free, but registration is required. Call us at 618-222-2561 or email ask@agesmart.org to get on the list!
